Operational Excellence
Course Overview
(2-day workshop)- The session will provide a foundational understanding of the concepts outlined in Kevin Duggan's book Design for Operational Excellence. In addition to these core ideas, the session will introduce new material focused on the practical, real-world application of these principles.
Learning Objectives
Day 1: Operational Excellence Overview: Day 1 will align participants around a shared definition of Operational Excellence (OpEx) and introduce key concepts that empower them to observe and articulate progress using straightforward terms applicable to any operating environment. This foundational module sets the stage for deeper exploration in Days 2.
- Comparing traditional Continuous Improvement approaches with Operational Excellence
- Exploring the 9 Questions framework for transitioning to Operational Excellence
- Understanding the core Principles of Operational Excellence
- Crafting clear definitions of Operational Excellence for employees
- Applying a design-based approach to business transformation
- Leveraging Process, Culture, and Leadership as building blocks for OpEx
Day 2: Operational Excellence in the Real World — Defense & Manufacturing: Day 2 explores how Operational Excellence (OpEx) is adapted to different operational environments. While core OpEx principles apply universally, their implementation requires strategies tailored to the specific challenges and dynamics of each business. This session begins a focused look at deploying OpEx in varied settings and examines how environmental factors influence the tools and approaches used.
- Designing for OpEx in Manufacturing
- Differentiating high-volume vs. high-mix manufacturing
- Selecting deployment tools aligned with the operational environment
- Designing for OpEx in Defense
- Navigating OpEx deployment within strict regulatory frameworks
- Addressing aerospace-specific requirements for program success
- Other defense applications including land based and naval
- Integrating OpEx with existing quality programs in defense sectors
