Systems Engineering for the Defence Sector

The aim of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of SE concepts, history, methodologies and application areas as well as the key elements and processes of Systems Engineering (SE) with the best practices from defence industry.

The training aims to equip participants with both theoretical foundations and industry best practices to strengthen their SE capabilities and apply them effectively in real-world projects.

Through in-depth coverage of the system life cycle, technical processes, and technical management processes, participants will gain the competencies required to actively contribute to all stages of system development—from concept and design to implementation and operation.

Learning Objectives

  1. Fundamentals of SE: Participants will understand what SE is, its origin and history, and grasp the fundamentals of the systems approach.
  2. System Concepts: Participants will understand the definition of systems, their characteristics, and the concepts related to complex systems (complicated vs complex), and understand the importance of these concepts in SE.
  3. The Role of the Systems Engineer: Participants will learn who a systems engineers are, what they do, and understand will the structure of the SE team, and will better define their own roles.
  4. Relations to Different Engineering Disciplines: Participants will explore the relationships between SE and other engineering disciplines and project management, and will understand the interdisciplinary integrity.
  5. System Engineering Methods: Participants will recognize different methods and approaches such as V-Model, Lean Systems Engineering, Agile Systems Engineering, and evaluate the applicability of these methods in their projects.
  6. System Engineering Process: Participants will learn about ISO/IEC 15288 standards and SE lifecycle processes.
  7. System Life Cycle Understanding: Participants understand the characteristics, stages and relationships between processes of the system life cycle and grasp the basic structure of SE.
  8. Application and Adaptation: At the end of the training, participants will have the ability to integrate and apply the processes they have learned to real-world projects.
